“Conscious breathing heightens awareness and deepens relaxation. “
– Dan Brule
In my post “Breathe - a simple technique that can change your voice” I explain how the deep breathing technique works and touch on the benefits of deep breathing.
We have already established that knowing how to breathe right will help you be more in control of your voice.
So here are 5 additional benefits of the deep breathing technique:
1. With deep breathing techniques, you will become more relaxed.
When you breathe deeply, your brain immediately starts to calm down and relax. The brain sends a message to your body. With the effect of decreasing heart rate, and lowering blood pressure.
2. Better posture and presence with deep breathing.
Breathing this way can help you stand straight and take up more space. This has a huge effect on your audience. They will perceive you as confident and as someone who knows what they are talking about.
3. Breathing technique will help you feel more connected to yourself and your audience.
When using the deep breathing technique, you are more connected to the core of your body. This helps to also be connected to your audience. You are more open to notice their reaction and can act accordingly.
4. You will take more time and speak slower when breathing well.
When we are nervous, we have a tendency to speak quickly. We want to get it over with. The problem with this is that your audience will not understand you well, and potentially get confused. This can make you feel even more insecure. When you take more time to breathe you will give your audience time to digest what you have said.
5. You help your audience relax when you relax, yourself
As you are able to relax into your breath, your audience feels relaxed as well. When we are nervous we send off nervous energy. Using the deep breathing technique can help you and your audience relax. This is much more beneficial for giving and receiving information.
